teletop/ntl

I regularly phone my daughter in the usa, so I registered my phone with teletop for £1:50. and then calls to usa @0p per min. (5p connection fee) this is for 90 days and then re-rgister for £1:50. for further 90 days. However when I received my bill from NTL I noticed on two occasions I had been charged for the duration of the call (to usa) via teletops access number. This means I am paying teletop £1:50 for 0p per min calls but getting charged to call their access number for the duration of the call.(to the USA) Are there any other Ntl customers who use this service, and can advise me if this is a common occurence ? and is there any way round this?
Regards Docker

Were you by any chance dialling the teletop 020 access number at a time when you did not have NTL inclusive calls to 01/02 .EG.Peak.If so they would charge you!
  • No I'm on their 24/7 but you do pay for premium rate numbers.

Sounds like a typical NTL billing 'error'. Phone 'em to complain quickly - before they remove their 0800 numbers.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I appreciate you have to pay to call premium numbers. But if you have a 24/7 package for free calls to 01/02 numbers the fault lies with NTL if they are charging you to call them ,and you need to ask them for are refund.

You pay NTL £26 a month for the priviledge? of this service the least they can do is get your bills right.

The Teletop site is https://www.teletop.co.uk and is another service from Finarea, providers of 1899, 18185, 18866 and others.

You call the 0911 premium rate number to credit your account. You then call an 020 (London) number. This means you will be charged for the duration of the call to the 020 number, if the package you are on charges for such number at the time of the call.

When you call the 0911 number you get £1.50's worth of credit on your Teletop account. So if you only call the USA, you can call it 30 times as each time it costs you 5p from your Teletop account.

As mentioned above, it also costs you normal rates, according to your landline provider. NTL have a 6p connection fee for most numbers, plus the pence per minute.

So the grand total for a call to the US will be 5p+11p+the pence per min charge to the 020 number.

Have a look at 18185, you can call the US for 1p/min plus a 4p connection fee via their freephone number. ;)

Edit: My post crossed with yours, dockerdooley. Ditto Heinz's comments. Another sign that Rip-off Britain is alive and well when you will soon have to pay them to correct their mistake!

If the OP has a 24/7 inclusive calls package on NTL to 01/02 numbers surely NTL dont raise a 6p connection. So each call via Teletop would cost them only 5p connection out of his £1.50p premium rate top up,as the 01/02 element of the call should be free.

if you have inclusive calls with ntl you don't pay the connection charge on those calls included in your deal.
