Halifax want £400!! Not my fault!!!

Having transfered £400 into my brother's account in January, he recieved £800 (didn't mention it to me!!). Only £400 left my account.
Last week I received a letter from Halifax stating this error and claiming that one of us had benefited and therefore legally must pay it back. As my brother is with Abbey National I presumme they will have an issue getting it from him.
So, they will take £400 from my account next week.
This is not my fault!!! How can they expect me to pay when I haven't benefited????
I plan to close my account and have no intention of ever paying the money. Will I be taken to court?
Thanks ;-)

I don't see how you can be if only £400 left your account, surely they must pursue your brother for the 'extra' £400 they sent. I think they are trying it on with you as you are the easier target.

I honestly couldn't see them winning against you as you haven't received the money. They would have to pursue the recipient of the funds.businessme wrote: »I plan to close my account and have no intention of ever paying the money. Will I be taken to court?0 -
halifax have no case, pursue this with the bank manager and complain in writing. their mistake nothing to do with you.0

But, did it come back a few days later? - Why do you want to close your bank account? -
Why are you worried about legal action???
Somehow I feel, there might be more to that story, than you have told us so far.0 -
That's what I was thinking as well. The whole thing sound a wee bit bizarre......0
