ISP 'free' email...

The main reason i have not changed ISP is because of the hassle it needs to let everyone know the new email address. To that end i am after an email address that is 'ISP free'.

Can i have suggestions please. Is Google's GMAIL any good? Or should i pay a monthly fee for a domain based one; if so how much roughly and how does it work?

Why not just enter "free web based email" into Google and take your pick. You might want to consider different addresses for different things. Apart from anything else this cuts down on spam. One address for family and friends, one for purchasing off the Internet, one for posting to forums etc etc.

Just get yourself a domain, a .co.uk only costs about £3 a year.

Gmail every time. If you want a domain, you can add it to gmail easily.

GMail every time again.
It's not a hassle changing. 10 mins to set it up, 5 mins to send a group email to everyone in your address book advising them, job done.
Do it at the same time you give notice to your ISP and then have both running in tandem for 30 days until you switch.
Also has the benefit of losing you a lot of spam from your old address (and the GMail spam filter is very good in my experience).

Completely agree, gmail is brilliant, never fails and you can check your emails wherever you are. If you need separate addresses for different things as previously mentioned, you can always have different gmail addresses for them. I have 3. Also pop access (using Outlook Express, Outlook or what you like).

I'd second that, then route it to whatever e-mail you want at the time, GMail, ISP mail etc. Also if you are working for yourself or planning to, it looks a lot more professional too.

They are dirt cheap, have a look at 123-reg.co.uk and can be unique to you e.g. [EMAIL="you@yoursurname.co.uk"]you@yoursurname.co.uk[/EMAIL] etc.

But the killer reason is that you can then setup as many different forwards as you like, all forwarding to your chosen account (gmail, isp etc) eg: [EMAIL="amazonorders@yoursurname.co.uk"]amazonorders@yoursurname.co.uk[/EMAIL], [EMAIL="tescoorders@yoursurname.co.uk"]tescoorders@yoursurname.co.uk[/EMAIL] etc then give every online company a different one, then if one gets spammed, you'll know exactly who passed it on and you can kill off the forward in a couple of clicks. I have about 50 domains, 10ish private for me and family, rest for business projects.

I have used gmail for years and it is excellent.
The spam filter is great but my goodness I do get a load of spam.

Recently GMX won the Webuser magazine gold award so I thought I would give that a go.
It has many similar features to gmail, and although I am not as keen on the interface, I have yet to receive any spam on that account.
Like gmail, gmx is free
