Trying to mend sister's PC - over the phone!!

Hi there.

Can anyone help me with my sister's PC? I am trying to advise her over the phone but it is the blind leading the blind! I am going over there after tea so any advice before then would be great.

She had it 2nd hand and is most worried that is keeps flashing up error messages similar to this:

AVG - in an error state/out of date.

When she clicks on the icon it says it is up to date!

She downloaded Hijack this and emailed the printout to me and I'm going to post it below. Is there anything she can wipe off? Is her PC up to date with programs/virus killers etc?

Thanks in advance.

Either reinstall it, or choose a better virus scanner, avast for example. Also turn on automatic updates (for windows).

    download this program: http://www.crossloop.com/

You can take control of her machine (she givs you a code, you type in it, both hit connect, it will prompt her to accept the connection)

use it all the time, its very very good. (works through NAT/firewalls etc...)

When you're there check the date on her computer. It could be that the BIOS battery has failed and this means the date is wrong which will then fail the AVG check.

If you don't like crossloop have a look at Team Viewer (http://www.teamviewer.com/index.aspx) it is free for non-commercial use and will also work through routers/firewalls etc.

Out of date version of AVG. Time to upgrade or to use another anti-virus solution.

Lots free from which to choose.

AVG 8.5(instead of version 7 which is installed) You have to remove the AVG AntiSpyware 7.5 installed.
    Avast
    Rising
    Avira

Will provide the links if you can't find them yourself.

Plus you'll need to update Windows XP SP2 to SP3.

    Internet Explorer 6 to IE8.

    Firefox to the latest version

Adaware 2007 also an out of date version.
