Debt collection agencies

I had a HSBC Credit card account that got passed on to a debt collection agency. It took me 6 yrs to pay it off and now it's clear. Would i still be able to claim charges even though the debt was passed to a collection agency? Any advice please!
And if so do i go through HSBC or through the Debt collection agency (who have told me that they don't have my details on file) funnily enough.
