Fuji Finepix faulty camera

Hi I hope someone here can help me.

I got a Fuji Finepix camera for Christmas bought my OH from Tesco.

It has developed a fault in that the viewing screen is flickering and distorted (basically unusable) although pictures can still be taken and come out fine.

We tried to return to Tesco but they have told us we have to phone their electrical helpline which takes us straight through to Fuji helpline.

Fuji have offered a repair (turn around within 7-10 days) but we have to package camera and return to them with proof of posting so they know it is still within warranty date.

I don't really want a repair and want a replacement. My receipt says that Tesco guarantee all its electrical products for 1 year so am I within my rights to ask for a replacement?

Thanks in advance

The 1 year warranty does not guarantee an automatic replacement, and after nearly 5/6 months use a repair does not sound unreasonable.

The warranty is in addition to (and does not replace) your statutory rights but the Sale of Goods act pretty much states what I have just said.

HOWEVER your contract is with Tesco and from a personal point of view I would not want to pay for postage, the repair should be at no cost to yourself, I know at Argos we send cameras off directly at our own cost.

You will probably need to accept a repair but not paying for postage.

    HTH a bit

  • My Finepix developed the same problem - apparently it's common and easy for them to repair - it was well out of warranty so I had to pay for the repair (cheaper to repair than replace, and more eco-friendly). The service was really good, the camera works perfectly now and I got it back within about 5 days.

So, if you do accept the repair, I think they should do a good job for you, and you'd never know there was a problem.

If it were me, I think I'd be tempted to pay the postage myself (£4-5 maybe), just to cut out the middleman of Tesco - and the risk that they'll lose it in their store somehow, and drag their feet - and get the problem sorted quickly.

i would have an expectation of a camera (ANY electrical product, actually) lasting more than 5/6 mnths..

surely up to the shop (i think) to replace/refund, then take up with Fuji (or their supplier)..?

    Thank you for your replies.

I must admit my thinking was that I would expect a camera to last longer than 5/6 months (and I don't even use it that much - probably 3 or 4 times in that space of time but obviously the shop doesn't know that).

Have we become a society that now doesn't expect things to last as it seems that everything you do or buy has a fault so we end up becoming immune so don't bother to complain?

Anyway, aside from that, thank you for your comments, I was loathed to get a repair as it might feel like the camera was second hand on it's return - I know it's only a camera but it was a present and I really like it.

I think I will give Tesco another try before going down the repair route. I will let you know how I get on.

It will be repaired for free by Fuji under their 12 month guarantee.
Probably quicker/easier to go down that route then via Tesco, even though yuor contract is with them no Fuji.

Agreed - but it's probably safer and cheaper to go via Tescos. If something goes wrong (e.g. it goes missing in transit) you're in a slightly awkward position, and Tescos will be the ones to pay for recorded postage.

I had a similar fault with a Fuji a few years ago - bought via Dixons - and they were quick and effective with the repair. Dixons were rubbish, but that's another matter...
