After several failed attempts (over several years), I finally migrated one of my pcs over to Ubuntu.
  • Filezilla for FTP,
  • Thunderbird for various email accounts.
  • XSame for scanning (through the Gimp)
  • Shared folders through a Windows network using Samba
  • Shared printers too!

Best things -
  • The pc is 900 Mhz with 256mbyte memory. It's as quick my 2.2 P4 1Gbyte XP machine next to it.
  • no malware software needed
  • it's all free and legal !!!!

Worst things -
  • lots of systems commands (sudo etc) to type in to set up stuff.
  • no decent CRM software & problems with Wine when importing database in ACT!
  • no system restore (that i can find)
  • Big, Big learning curve for the new software (especially the very powerful Thunderbird!)
Definitely recommend it if you're competent.
It really is starting to shape up now.

    Cheers & Congrats!!

I've been Ubuntu for almost everything for about 12 months now, having been openoffice for a year or so before...

Yup, it takes a bit of time to learn - but so did Windows!

Dunno what you think but my experience if that it is faster, more secure & more robust/fewer crashes (although I grant Windoze has improved, from a very low base). And as you say free...

I have a dual-boot Dell laptop & the speed difference is noticeable so most things..

    Keep playing !!

    Cheers!

PS Bit I'm grateful to Mr Gates for providing products which meed my & other's work to keep the companies using the going.. Many years of profitably working in IT struggling with his stuff - work that didn't need doing if people had only gone with cheaper, easier alternatives!
