Old Style Ways of Conditioning - ladies question???

Never posted here before but posted elsewhere on this site so hi!
I hope someone can help. Stupid problem really but a devastating matter to me. I've been growing my hair now for 9 years & it's at a place where I'm happy with, I take a lot of pride in my hair thinking it's my best feature.
Thing is, I've recently moved away from UK to North Norway & since being here, hey the water is amazing, so pure, but my hair is now so dry & awful I can barely get a comb through it (I have fine but normal hair). My skin is now just as dry. I use an expensive brand named shampoo & conditioner plus conditioning boost that I brought with me in bulk but it doesn't do the same wonders for my hair as it would in UK. I think perhaps the cold weather doesn't help, but it is getting to 15 degrees now in the day (I'm 250 miles inside the arctic circle & about 150 miles from North Pole). I think it's something in the water drying my hair to frazzle.
Can anybody please recommend a proven hair repair something? I don't mind trying anything even if it's beaten eggs in my hair!!! Any hair products here are so expensive I can't afford it, it's unspeakable, but my salon conditioners I bought with me aren't working like they did... Any old wives tales would be welcome...
I have tried putting vit E lotions in my hair whilst drying, I have also tried many times not blow drying... any advice would be great, I'm losing my hair just because it's coming out due to knots dryness...

olive or sunflower oil? either as an overnight conditioner or as a 'serum'? even better if you wrap your hair in a warm towel while wearing it
should work as it forms a barrier.
bjork used to use cream cheese in her hair..................:A MSE's turbo-charged CurlyWurlyGirly:AThinks Naughty Things Too Much Clique Member No 3, 4 & 5

I put olive oil on my hair yesterday and it really does work! There seem to be lots of different receipes aound, but I warmed a few tablespoons of normal olive oil that I'd use for cooking, and poured in on to wet hair. I then stuck a shower cap on and soaked in the bath for 20 mins, so it was nice and warm and had plenty of time to soak in. After, I had to shampoo 2 or 3 times to get the oil out, then conditioner as usual. Worth a try!0

Wow, did she? (Bjork) She's Icelandic isn't she... did she ever mention it working?
Unfortunately here, oils are also very expensive so if you do buy those ones (olive or sunflower), you have to use them sparingly. A bottle of sunflower oil that you would get in say tesco for £1.50 a litre, would cost here about £6 for the same amount. I've got veg oil! That was about £5 for a 1ltr bottle...
I will add that since being here (moved here Feb this yr), I have noticed that most women have short hair, I'm guessing that's not due to fashion, it's due to upkeep, same problems I'm having... but I can't have my hair cut off, I simply can't do it...
I don't know of anywhere here that does aromatherapy oils - the local pharmacy does basics like lavender, but charge about £10 for a little bottle. Still can't afford that! No wonder the ladies here don't have long hair!
I heard something once about mayonnaise - am I dreaming or would that work? If so, how on earth do you use it?0 -
I haven't tried any of these but you could experiment - depending on how expensive the products are in Norway - https://www.pioneerthinking.com/hair.html0

Wow. Veg oil should work tooYou'd probably only need a couple of spoonfuls of oil to coat your hair. So should be pence to try it - it's got to be worth it.

Aromatherapy oils wouldn't be moisturising so would be a waste of cash for this jobcharmed-imsure wrote: »I heard something once about mayonnaise - am I dreaming or would that work? If so, how on earth do you use it?
Yes it does - lots of oil and protein in mayo. smooth onto dry hair, allow to soak in for 20+ minutes (a warm towel or bath will help) and rinse out/condition.
do you have someone here that can buy and ship things to you at more reasonable cost?:A MSE's turbo-charged CurlyWurlyGirly:AThinks Naughty Things Too Much Clique Member No 3, 4 & 5

I don't have a bath here (much to my dismay!) but I will try the mayo thing, I'll have to just use a warm towel wrap. I can't import things here as such. I get my MIL to send over cheese sauces & cajun spice in packets (can't get them here) but to import food stuffs other than packets isn't legal. I got my current brand shampoos etc over on a large container with the rest of my furniture so that was allowed.
Stupid question but does it matter if it's full fat mayo or diet mayo?0 -

need to be full fat - you need the oil
diet mayo is full of sugar
i'd try the oil thing (damp hair) first though:A MSE's turbo-charged CurlyWurlyGirly:AThinks Naughty Things Too Much Clique Member No 3, 4 & 5

I should say that whatever I can do needs to be done on a daily basis, not just a once a week thingy... I'll need to do it every time I wash my hair...0

okay, if it were me (and i am having similar if less drastic issues having moved back to Wales from London) I'd do a longer oil conditioning treatment at night (overnight if possible) one night and use the mayo conditioner in the morning.
(or proper hair conditioner might work in combination with the oil treatments - use the oil once a week perhaps?)
you might just need to try different combinations to get it cracked.
good luck!:A MSE's turbo-charged CurlyWurlyGirly:AThinks Naughty Things Too Much Clique Member No 3, 4 & 5

If you can get hold of jojoba oil, it mgiht be worth trying that. It's technically a wax, but looks like an oil. It has very similar properties to skin and hair.
I do know that on the yahoo group uksoaping, there's a girl who lives in Norway, so it might be worth trying to contact her. She'll be able to let you know the best place to buy oils for your hair.0
