refused by first direct

I revently applied for a current acoount with first direct, because I a good on-line bank account to manage my funds better.

But they refused me after looking at my credit history with experian.

I didn't want any credit or an overdraft,
just a simple account.

why did they refuse me?

and any other online banks worth a try??

thanks

  • Have you looked ay your Experian files yourself?
It only costs £2 to get copies. There might be errors on there that are causing you difficulties or on the other hand you might know why First Direct refused you.
I'm afraid First Direct and other Internet only banks want to 'cherry pick 'accounts and they are not in the marketplace to provide just simple accounts with no credit.

  • i wouldn't know what I was looking at, is there any tips what to make of the credit report?
    and what to look for?
  • Ask any bank or building society for an experian form(I think you can also apply online but it costs more) send it off with all your addresses over the last 6 years and they will send you back a copy of your credit reference files.
This will show if you have been in arrears or late in paying or have a ccj etc against you.
It may be that there is something there which is wrong and if so you will get the opportunity to ask them to alter or at the very least a note detailing your circumstances against any particular entry.
In my opinion it is well worth it

    Its easy, your looking at
    a. Have you have missed payments or not, or late payments and if so how late.
    b. Total outstanding debt
    c. Total outstanding credit limits.
    d. Histroy length i.e. months or years.
  • even without a overdraft your maestro card will still allow you to go over your limit, if you have a bad credit history banks will reject you, in particular fd who are very strict.
