built in laptop sd card reader problem

ive got a dell inspiron 1501, it has built in sd card reader, but it doesnt always recognise the card when i insert it. ive been trying tonight but it doesnt show in my computer, it makes a sound when i insert it and remove it but cant see the card on my computer.
any ideas?

what os and sp are you on?
alot of the time with these readers they dont like doing what you want them to do unless you format the card in that particular reader, my old laptop had the same issue and wanted me to format some cards and not others, i think it was just awkward about certain makes.Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -
Have a look in Device Manager and see if the reader is showing up there as working or not. If not, then try uninstalling it and reinstalling it-the drivers may have become corrupt.No free lunch, and no free laptop
