i lke holidaying in usa and prefer nice small towns rather than big cities. any ideas of where to go possibly around boston, washington, chicago or minnesota

Around Boston there are lots of nice towns, most of them full of students and therefore character. Try Cambridge or somewhere thereabouts.
For Washington, perhaps stay in Baltimore? Yes it's a fairly large city but it really doesn't feel like one. Or you could choose one of the many commuter towns nearby - they're all linked by the Amtrak rail line so you could look at their website for more details.
Obviously the phrase 'small town America' means places a bit more remote (and inbred
), and if that's what you're looking for I'm sorry I don't know much about it. But I hope none the less that I've been able to give you a good starting-point... 0 -
