Slow internet speeds

Hello, hopefully somebody will be able to give me some advice as I'm not particularly technical.
My dad has an internet connection to TalkTalk and having run the testyourbroadbandspeedchecker (or something like that) he is getting download speeds of 500 (i.e below 1mb) which doesnt sound the best to me.
However, my speeds are even worse as I am upstairs in my room and only have a wireless dongle. The speed in the bottom right hand corner of the computer says 54.0 Mbps and on testyourbroadbandspeedchecker i got a speed of 250-300.
My questions are -
1) Should my dad be getting speeds greater than 500?
2) Should I be getting speeds greater than 250-300?
3) What are my options to improve me speeds in my room?
Any help much appreciated.
Thanks
James

Just leave them and go over to O2 or BE Unlimited
I wasted 4 weeks with AOL (whom TalkTalk TOOK OVER)
Its not worth the hassle0 -
It wasnt this slow for many weeks/months but seems to have just happended the last few days0

They may have moved you onto a new server - are you doing peer to peer stuff - because they throttle aggressively.
Just switch provider0 -
It all depends on how close you are to the exchange. Put your details into this site and report back on what speed it says you should be getting.

Download speeds of around 500 sound about right then. With the 4.3Mbps, the maximum you could hope for is around 530KBpsNorthern Ireland club member No 382 :j0
