No sound off Internet using XP

I don’t know much about computers, but I can’t get any sound off the Internet. My system works fine when playing recorded material eg mp3 and av files. It has been like this for a while. I have checked how the sound system is set up by looking at other computers and I can’t see anything wrong. In Control Panel /Sounds and Audio Devices I have got the box ticked for ‘place volume icon in the task bar’, but it is not there. Deselecting it and reselecting it makes no difference. On someone’s advice I downloaded a load of extra codecs (can’t remember what they were called now) but it made no difference. On the Freebies forum someone put a good post about this: http://www.tvcatchup.com It works really well on other PCs that belong to different members of my family, but on mine all I get is a good picture and no sound. Now that I would like to use this website I’m really trying to resolve this problem. Has anyone got any suggestions? I’d be really grateful for some help. Thanks.

It's a driver problem. Most likely, your sound card doesn't have proper drivers installed. If you don't have special software for it, try to browse the producer's site.0

If you've got sound from mp3 playback etc then your drivers should be fine.
Look for a volume/speaker icon on the video toolbar within the webpage.
This allows you to adjust or mute the volume. You may have accidentally reduced or muted the volume on a previous visit to the particular website.
e.g. on Youtube its on the toolbar under the video ...0 -
Thanks for your help. The mute is definitely not on, and it won't play any sound over the Internet e.g .BBC Front Page, streamed programmes etc. Anyone got any other ideas? Thanks.0

If you go to the control panel & the bit where you're checking the box for the volume icon go to the advanced bit next to it. This brings up a box of all different volme controls, try adjusting those. If you had the volume icon up you could just right click to get to the same bit. Hope this helps.0

Thanks. I've already done that and all the controls are on an turned up quite high. The sound is OK if I play previously recorded material. It's just stuff I'm trying to stream off the Internet.0
