Why has my p.c. speeded up again?

A couple of weeks ago I posted saying that my p.c. was desperately slow and asked if I needed more memory (XP with 38 processes running). I had lots of very helpful replies and intend to put another memory stick in next week.
In the last few days though, it's speeded up a lot and I'm interested to know why this is. I've done nothing at all to it, apart from running anti-virus/spyware checks, etc. (all OK) but, at the time, this made no difference at all.
Any ideas??
Thanks.

Every time you go onto a webpage, files are saved into the cache/tempoary internet files. You need to clear them to create room for any new pages you go on.
Also do a defrag on a regular basis, this will get your files/programs in the right order so when you open them the computer does not have to search the drive for them.0 -

the defrag is under "All Programs" (bottom left of the screen on the start button)
