Help.... drove into front of my house!!!

Hi

I have just drove into the front of my house and it has caused structural damage to the front of the house and I was wondering I am able to claim on my house insurance. My policy stated collision by vehicle does anyone know if it includes me. Feeling rather stupid.

Thanks in advance

Hi - the normal buildings policy covers impact by road vehicles even if you hit it when driving your own car.All you should have to pay is any excess that applies.

Sorry but I'm currently grinning at your post (as I'm sure a few others are!!). Anyway, IMHO you're probably better off just claiming on your car insurance.

The reason for this is that your house insurers will not cover the damage to your car, whereas your car insurers (provided you're fully comp) should cover both car and house. You will probably lose the no claims on the car (unless you protect it) but by not claiming on the house you should ensure your household insurance doesn't rise next year. You will also only need to pay 1 excess.

How much damage did you actually do? (Just being nosey)

Sorry, but you will need to claim under both your home and motor policies. Your car insurance won't cover the damage caused to the house. They would only cover damage to property if it belongs to someone else.

Just joined today but been in the insurance industry 20 yrs now, 8 yrs as a claims investigator.

Your household insurer will cover the damage to the house less any policy excess you have to pay. They will however want to know the details of your motor insurers. They will then recover the repair costs from them.

Property insurers always attempt recovery from motor insurers where known because there is no way a wall or a house could be responsible for the incident.

The downside for you is it mean loss of No Claims Discount on your motor insurance unless you have a protected bonus.

You will not be able to recover your excess or other out of pocket expenses not covered by your household insurers from your motor insurers. The reason for this is you would effectively be sueing yourself and that is not allowed in English law.

And, of course, loss of NCD on your house insurance if you have it, and if not a possible increase in premium next year.

Sorry mooch, we should not laugh at the misfortunes of others, but sometimes we can't help it. Glad it's being sorted so promptly, I know friends who had a stolen car driven into their house and it took about a year to sort out! House was still habitable but there were some nasty cracks!
