applying for new credit card after default

in Credit cards
I defaulted in 2003 with my Amex and a MBNA Mastercard with a debt of 24,000 pounds. After many letters, they passed it on to a debt collecting agency, and another, and another until nothing for the last 2 years. I have never been informed of having been made bankrupt. I now live in Asia.
Questions:
1. Do I take it that both AMEX and MBNA sold off the debt which was never recovered and have given up on receovering it?
2. Do I still owe money to AMEX and MBNA?
3. I still have my bank accounts in the UK and overseas with only limited o/d facility, would a new application be automatically refused?
For anyone in my position, it has been very trying to live without credit cards for 6 years. I am not looking for new credit but just a card to pay for things on the internet which cannot be paid otherwise.
Appeciate answers.

1. Quite possibly though it is likely another debt collector will appear out of the woodwork
2. Yes you do.... HOWEVER, as 6 years has either passed or will soon be passing since the default, the debt either is or is about to be statute barred. This means it cannot be enforced through the courts. Whilst you do still owe the money they will have no way of making you pay. The moral implications of that are down to you however if you start making payments the 6 years clock will start over again.
3. If the defaults have dropped off your credit file it is possible you will be accepted, however if you have no credit history over those 6 years from other products that wont help0
