Claiming back privately rented accommodation on travel insurance

Hi I wonder if anyone can help.
We are due to go on holiday with our friends and their baby on Saturday, however it looks like the little one has chickenpox! We have booked flights and privately rented an apartment and I wondered if anyone knew if they were likely to be able to claim their half of the accom costs back on their insurance. We won't be able to find anyone else to go in their place at this short notice and obviously would prefer not to have to refund them out of our own pocket.
Can anyone advise?
Thanks
Caroline.

Sure - if (big if) they have a decent insurer, this is exactly why you carry insurance. But they must obvuiously be within the terms of their policy.

Also (my thought) you are in no legal obligation to refund them their half of te rental it may be a nice thing to do, but it is up to them to makes sure they are protected against such things.

Put it this way - you could have rented a 1/2 bed villa for your family but as they were going with you, you had to rent 3/4 bed - you would not have the additional cost of rental of a bigger property if it was not for them wanting to go with you, so they should be at least responsible for any cost over what you would have booked for your family.

Holidaying with family and friends is nice, but I'd let every family book their own holiday.
