Thanks for all your kind advice. I did the school run this morning and the noise had multiplied like you wouldn't believe  Before I did the run, I turned the car on, and tried to move the exhaust and was able to move it about as per post #6

I took it in to Skoda and he had a proper look for me and is going to do the repairs. He's explained it all to me very carefully but it was still gobbledegook. I just wanted to update the thread and thank you guys for your help.

Was it the exhaust? Perhaps the exhaust manifold gasket?

The middle part of the exhaust has completely sheared away (I have no idea how or where it happened) and the catalytic converter was damaged.

Speed bump or sometimes just wear and tear, it's a really hot piece of metal which rusts quite happily without anyones help.

Glad your getting it sorted, hope you enjoyed your days as a boy racer :)

I now understand why their stereos are so loud - it's the only way they can hear the music over the exhaust :eek::rotfl:

    Blowing exhaust?
Either a rust hole in a part or a joint worked loose.
Gaskets can fail on the downpipe.
    Happy chappy
