You're not allowed to bring a lot, see below:

When travelling from outside the EU to the UK you are allowed to bring in the following, provided you travel with the items and do not intend to sell them.

200 cigarettes; or 100 cigarillos; or 50 cigars; or 250 gms of tobacco
2 litres of still table wine
1 litre of spirits or strong liqueurs over 22% volume; or 2 litres of fortified wine, sparkling wine or other liqueurs
    60cc/ml of perfume
    250cc/ml of toilet water
£145 worth of all other goods including gifts and souvenirs

As a regular traveller to New York and always on the eye out for a bargain, I have noticed that there isn't much left to sell back here at profits. Ipod are now worth the hassle with different plugs etc for only $40 difference.

You could have a look at designer wear on ebay for brands like Nautica and Timberland as macy's sell them mega cheaply.

I got a winter Ralph Lauren jacket which retails for £190 in Frasers and got it for under $100 in Macy's ! (Remember to pick up your 11% discount card for being a tourist)

Tommy Hilfiger stuff is cheap etc and there may be a market for Abercrombie and Fitch stuff here.

It's not the bargain place it used to be I'm afraid.

I found that a lot of stuff in places like Toys R Us was cheaper than here by quite a bit, but things like music cd's where more expensive in a lot of the Virgin Stores (most cds where marked as UK imports).
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • i agree with alison74 the states isn't as cheap as it used to be. the amount of clothing , belts and timberland/rockport footwear ( generally footwear has always been more expensive than the uk but these 2 stores had some bargains ) that we bring back has diminished over the years. you can still get some 'personal' bargains clothing wise but don't think there's really the opportunity to buy something clothing wise and sell it on at a decent (if any ) profit.
things like mp3 players just didn't seem worth the hassle of buying there and bringing them back to save a couple of quid

If you would like to pay the investment, you can get a bus to the Outlets in New Jersey (i.e. Woodbury Common) - it costs approx. £30 each and takes about two hours. There are numerous designer outlet shops here from Saks clearance shop, Armani, Gucci, Fendi etc.

I bought numerous goods here including some Jimmy Choo boots which almost paid for the holiday when sold on.

Check out magazines e.g. In Style/Heat for what sorts of labels are hot before you set off. I saw an article on Baby Phat before I went which was dirt cheap in New York yet retailed for a fortune here as Madonna was seen wearing it the week before!

Century 21 near ground zero is also excellent and well worth a visit.

Leylauk is right KCharnock - when I went (admittedly some years ago now!) the tax you paid was higher in NY than in New Jersey and the bargains were definetly in New Jersey.
Have fun - NY is fantastic :D

Century 21 is really good as the prices drop daily other than that prices are moreorless the same as here. I always do well with shoes and love their beddings but saying that TMexx Home & Wear is never short of great bedding at excellent prices.

benefit make up and kiehls cosmetics are about half the price in the states compared to what we pay here. not sure if you could make money selling them on ebay but they are definitely worth stocking up on for personal use
Not buying clothes for a year - it's liberating!
