Can anyone help me with Train Tickets?

Hi,
I am thinking about traveling from Chesterfield, Derbyshire to Bodmin on 08/08/09 and returning on 22/08/09 with my 3 Kids (aged 1, 4 and 6).
I have not been on a train for years and so didn't really have any clue with how much I should expect to pay (and the Children have never even been on a train!).
I have had a quick look on thetrainline and I think the cheapest I could find was £167.
If anyone could give me any advice, I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Zippy x

Just looked at the trainline again and looked at prices using a family and friends card and the cost has gone down to £93.95 :j. that is a lot better.

The railcard is free & when you renew it, as it runs out 31/07/2009 your new railcard is half price.
The offer ends in 2 days.

Thank you very much, I have just applied for the railcard.
My Husband will be driving down to Bodmin, but I hate the journey down there in the car (5/6 hours with 3 Kids crammed into the car ), so I was hoping to go down on the train with them, the eldest 2 would be very excited about going on a train and I would be able to look forward to going on Holiday without having to worry about the car journey and my Husband would be able to drive down in peace.

Two more tips - DON'T BOOK YET. The cheap advance tickets haven't been released yet and if you are lucky could bring the cost down to between £50 and £60 with a railcard. It will be at least another month, possibly two before they come out. And if you are unlucky and don't find them you won't have lost anything as booking before the advance fares come out costs the same as booking on the day
And don't use the trainline - they charge a booking fee.
First Great Western or Cross Country (amongst others) will sell at the same price without a fee - as will Chesterfield Station.0 -
Another thing is that as you are in Chesterfield you could check with megatrain www.megatrain.com as sometimes they have fares from Chesterfield, Nottingham, Derby or Sheffield for as low as 1 pound. Then buy a ticket from London to Bodmin. Megatrain offer Waterloo to Exeter so if that deal was good for you then you would only need a ticket from Exeter to Bodmin0
