Can some one please advise how I can repaint metal garden table and chairs. Where the paint has peeled off, the metal surface is powdered. I believe this is oxidation. I don't know what the metal is.
Thanks in advance

I think you would sand it and then use a Hammerite paint on it.0

No need to sand with hammerite, just rub down with a stiff wire brush to get all the loose paint and rust off.

Hammerite is the stuff to use.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
Ronseal do a hammerite paint called 'no rust'
I used it today on some dexion storage shelves over rust smells just like Hammerite but appears to be cheaper where I saw it that Hammerite but they doesnt seem to be sa many stockists or range of colours

I would steer well clear of hammerite. It takes ages to dry and it falls off, and in my experience it does not stop rust.
First we need to know about the existing paint. Is it the original? If it is it is almost certainly powder coating. The only advantage of which is it's cheap to apply in the factory. It is almost impossible to remove, except that rust does it easily, and it peels off in sheets.
If it is powder coating, it all needs to come off, then you can stabilise the rust using Fertan or Bilt Hamber's Hydrate 80. Once that is done you can paint. I would suggest Bedec Multi Surface paint. It is a waterbased acrylic. Easy to apply, but with all paints you will need three coats at least.0 -
I have tried hammerite in the past and it is not as good as it claims to be.
Hvae a look at this- renovating railings
They have used an oil called owatrol oil, this stuff neutralises the rust and you can paint right over it. You can also mix it with paint to make the paint flow more easily, but you can't mix it with hot paints such as hammerite.

If the powder is white then the itms are aluminium so Hammerite is a definate no go unless you use a special primer first. What colour is the powder, brown or white ?Can some one please advise how I can repaint metal garden table and chairs. Where the paint has peeled off, the metal surface is powdered. Molerat the powder is white, so perhaps the metal is aluminium. So is there a special primer to use?
The original paint has a matt finish not glossy.
Thanks everyone for all your advice.
I think I will try wire brushing, unless anyone has got other ideas.0 -
There is Hammerite Special Metals Primer for use on copper, aluminium, galvanised etc. Just means you have to paint it twice.Molerat the powder is white, so perhaps the metal is aluminium. So is there a special primer to use?
