connection problem

Can anyone please help me?, i've just been away on holiday and been using a 3 mobile dongle with no problems, came home and was looking forward to using my SKY broadband, alas it just won't connect !. I press the button to repair the fault and it it says it can't repair, so in desperation I tried connecting to an unsecured network and im now piggy backing no problem, but we all know that this isn't a solution, but hopefully some kind soul can help me find it.

Just one thing to add, my wife has a netbook that is connecting to our SKY broadband (so the network isn't down)

I'd be interested in anyone's replies to this as I have the same problem with BT broadband. Started yesterday morning upon booting up, not problems at all before then. Couldn't repair it either. No connectivity on the PC, yet the MAC laptop works fine on the wireless router using Firefox.

Jebervic have you looked to see what your IP address is? Mine had changed from a 192 to a default one (164), so I changed it back manually, then tried to repair which it claimed successful and insists I have full connectivity.

I can get to my emails through the web on the laptop, BUT still cannot sign in to BT Yahoo on the PC, and Firefox and IE browsers all fail to connect as well.

The last time we couldn't sign on like this I didn't have the laptop to check anything, but three days later everything worked fine without doing anything.....

I'm going to email BT tomorrow morning to see if there's anything going on (says not on the BT status page), but any other ideas or suggestions would be appreciated?

I assume you are trying to connect wirelessly? Since you can connect to another network, there isn't a problem with your wireless card. Can you see your own network? if so, have you tried re-entering your network key?
If the netbook can connect, then there isn't a problem with your router either.
Have you tried a temporary connection by ethernet to see if this works. If so, it can only be a failure to find and connect to your own wireless network.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thanks macman. Although your post was meant for Jebervic, it triggered a few thoughts of with me. I'd checked all the devices, installed various upgrades, extensively checked for viruses, trojans, worm etc, cleaned up unwanted files, updated modem drivers, and got to a point where there had to be something physically preventing us from connecting.

After reading your post, we postponed emailing BT and decided to go right back to basics tonight and borrowed a working ethernet cable from our next door neighbour. Switched it over, and the computer spent a long time trying to acquire an IP address. One more thing, I remembered I had manually put in an IP address a few days ago, so I changed it back to acquiring it automatically once more.

Lo and behold, we can sign in no problem at all now.

I think it was definitely the cable. It looked quite bent and twisted when we removed it, so it's possible some of the connections inside were broken.

Quite irritatingly, within 10 minutes of fixing it, we had a power cut. Hubby was wailing and grinding his teeth in frustration. He's experienced serious internet depravation since Saturday :rotfl:

Oh well, at least the computer is nice and clean and tidy now :D

    How are you doing Jebervic?

Have had Sky wireless broadband for 18 months with v few issues till last night.

The problem seems to be with wireless router - no-one in house can connect (although I can view other wireless networks on laptop but not with PC?)

The box should have top 2 then 4th green light on but only has top 2 (but intermittently the top 2 go off & 4th one comes on). The 4 lights at the bottom also come on, don't remember seeing those before .

I've tried switching on & off & also pressing the reset button - however I thought when I had pressed this in before I could feel movement but there is none?

Anyone else had similar problems

    Thanks.

    It is an ex-router.

It has ceased to be .

I am sure I will cope using only laptop.

I am sure I will be able to set up new router by myself, despite PC being nowhere near phone point and not having disk drive for lappy so can't set up on there.

I am sure I can take PC downstairs without taking chunks out of wall

You don't need to use Sky's CD to set up a router, so the lack of an optical drive doesn't prevent you from accessing it.
