prepayment but received bill

evening,

I have recently moved house before i moved i was on a prepeyment meter

on moving to the new property i am now on monthly direct debit,

i have recently received an outstanding bill for my previous address, there was no outstanding debt at the previous address.

How can I have an outstanding bill from a prepayment meter?

Because meters were not pre-pay 'in full'.

The old style pre-payment meters had to be set to the correct rates every time there was a price rise.

If, say, your pre-pay meter was set to 12p for a kWh and the price went up to 15p, the meter would need to be reset by the Utility company.

If it was not reset for every £100 you would build up a debt of £25.

The normal procedure when the meter was reset was to set the rate higher than needed so that it would recover the debt at, say, £10 a week until the debt was paid back.

You moved whilst you were still in debt presumably.

Some companies write off that debt, others don't.
