Hi, I have been asked to become a trustee of a local charity that I support.
I have no idea what being a trustee involves - can anyone provide me with some pointers or towards some useful reading material.
Any help/advice gratefully accepted.

This could is the best thing you can do for your charity. The charity should provide you with a volunteer job specification stating how much commitment is expected. Talk it over with existing trustees and maybe with some ex-trustees. Don't do it if you don't have the time or energy. If this is a well-managed thriving charity it is fulfilling and interesting, maybe exciting.
Check out the Trustee Network at:

The Charity Commission has a page indexing their guidance to Trustees -- there's a lot -- don't let it scare you off.

The NCVO (National Council of Voluntary Organisations) sells "The Good Trustee Guide" for £25. Much more at their website at http://www.ncvo-vol.org.uk/
Try the local library or the local voluntary service agency for a look at this guide. The agency might have advice as well.
VolResource has a page on trusteeship at

That should get you going0 -
To add to the previous post, the charity which has invited you should go through an induction process with you as well as offeriing regular training and development sessions.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0
