Usb port not working

Hi all we seem to have a problem with our computer i have tried to put a pen drive into the front usb port when connected it will not show in my computer but if i want to remove the pen drive it shows up in the safely remove hardware box i think that we might have a virus because we cant do a system restore plus our panda (antivirus) doesnt scan properly anybody have any ideas with the usb port not picking up the pen drives we also tried the back usb port still no look thanks in advance using windows xp

    Have you tried using the USB Pen in Windows Safe Mode.

    Well for starters do a manual update with your AV and then try a full scan with it and see if anything shows up. Panda is really not the best AV on the market.
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    I had a similar problem last week see here I tried various options scanning computer but after scanning with SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition my computer finally started behaving. I have tried scanning over the last couple of days with different spyware scanners and with Avast antivirus and everything looks clean for now.

    I would recommend Kaspersky Internet Security, I know its not free , but for £25 you can't go wrong

    It might be to do with the USB scket not having sufficient power for data transfer. So the chip on the drive is picked up by WIndows which knows it's there but insufficient power to pull data off it. Are there other USB sockets you can try ?

    Thanks Gavin57 had a look at the problems you had ive downloaded the programs you did and scanned and now the usb ports now work and are showing the usb stick so thanks for helping and thanks to everyone else who posted
