Acer Laptop

My boyfriend bought me a laptop as a present last Saturday (02/05/09) to help me with my Uni work. Today, I was using it in my room to do some stuff, and then decided to go downstairs and use it at the kitchen table instead.

Closed it over like usual and carried it downstairs, opened it up at the table and there are now big lines all over the screen, as if the screen has exploded or something. Can't see anything at all on the screen, it is still powering on as usual. When the laptop is turned off there are lines that look like cracks visible on the screen.

Phoned my boyfriend and he is going to go back to the shop tomorrow (either Currys or Comet) as there is obviously something wrong with it. He paid a lot of money for it along with software.

Just wondered if there is anything he should know before going to the store? What do you's think they will say? Are we only entitled to a repair rather than an exchange? If they try and say it was through the mis-use or something how do we prove that it wasn't?

Any comments/advice is appreciated :)

Get your BF to phone Consumer Direct before he goes back to the shop as they'll explain his rights to him regarding the purchas and whether he can reject the item or if he'll have to accept a repair.

If it's damaged they don't have to do anything, have you got contents insurance to cover it? It's not advised to carry a laptop that is switched on because you can damage the hard drive but I can't think of anyway you could damage a screen in that way unless you closed it on a pen or something?

The laptop was in "sleep" mode before I closed it over, and no there was nothing inside it when I closed it. It clicked shut, it wouldnt do that if there was something trapped inside it.

I honestly didn't damage it. If I did, I wouldn't waste my time on a forum asking for advice. I would just accept it.

And yeah, my dad has contents insurance but it's not really fair claiming through that when I did nothing wrong.

As it was in sleep mode and you didn't damage it it's worth going back to the shop, hope you get it sorted.

I know where you are coming from OP. Acer laptops are notorious for faults. Both mine and my fiance's ended up in pieces. First of all the screen cracks where it joins the base of the laptop (through no fault of your own) and eventually the ribbon snaps meaning that no power gets to the screen and thats your laptop useless.

Would never buy another acer, as both were only a year old (no guarantee and warranty useless). However, after that I bought a Compaq laptop and have had it for 2 years now and no problems :)

Usually Acers are quite reliable, although obviously a cheaper laptop will not last as long as a more expensive one.

Even if you say you put nothing in there - if you take it back to the shop they are likely to suspect you have as while screens break, they very very very very rarely crack without accidental damage.

Did you get What Ever Happens on the laptop?
