car hire novice: advice please

Hi,
I want to hire a car at Heraklion airport at the end of this month.
Tried quotes from holiday autos, hertz etc but I am bemused by possible excesses and the best way to cover them.
Also, how common is it to be asked to leave an 'imprint'?
Thanks for any advice.
Lozzer

Holiday Autos seem to have some good prices, there is normally an excess amount to pay, in the case of the Clio, it is 250 Euros, this can be waived for £2:75 a day. This will cover any damage to the car bodywork, paintwork, dents etc. Glass, wheels and tyre damage is not usually covered by this, for £33:75 you can cover damage to these items. if this rental is likely to be a "one off" that is probably the easiest way to cover any mishap that may happen. You could google car hire excess insurance and buy from somewhere else from around £2 a day to cover any damage, or get an annual policy for around £50 if you are likely to hire another car within the year.

All car hire companies will take a swipe of your card, probably around 300 Euros to cover the excess and fuel etc., this is quite normal and nothing to worry about.

I've been looking at car hire too, using the comparison sites and Hertz came out cheapest using an offer from Nectar.

However they were very vague on what deposit would be charged on my credit card, it mentioned an excess of between 700 & 1500 Euros depending on the car.
I don't want to find that I have no available credit on my credit card whilst on holiday so I may stick with Holiday Autos who I've used before.

That's pretty vague, you'd think they'd be able to give information by model, at least once you've made your choice! Don't blame you for going elsewhere! :rolleyes2

economycarhire uk has decent enough deals acting as a broker for local firms. often without the ridiculous excess. used them before and rented car from "marbesol" easiest car rental ever

Nectar sent me an e-mail with travel offers which included an extra 500 points if you booked a car for a week with Hertz & quoted pc 131655 & the last 11 digits of your nectar card number. When I clicked on the link, the Hertz screen also had the number 600412 entered in the discount code box. I have just tried it again though and it doesn't seem to be accepting the code.

Just read the T & Cs & the 500 bonus points offer expired on 10th May but using code 600412 still gives a 5% discount.
