Debt returned to haunt me!!

Back in January 2000 I split with an ex partner. I set up on my own in rented accommodation but had difficulty funding both the house with my ex and my flat (he was out of work and the bank wouldn't allow me to be removed from the mortgage).

Once I managed to get my name removed from the mortgage, I took out an IVA for all my debts (or so I thought). I have successfully completed the IVA but a loan that my ex and I took out in 1998 (I countersigned the documents), is now in default.

He has obviously come to an agreement with the loan provider to pay a minimum back each month. I do not know what his circumstances are (and am not really interested), however, as we have been apart for 9 years, surely there is a way of removing my name off this loan?

To say I came away with nothing, leaving him the house (which I believe he still lives in), I would like to move on and perhaps get a mortgage myself but this would bring my credit score down wouldn't it?? I can't see why he wouldn't take money from the equity of the house to pay this debt off (it stands at 7000.00 currently).

I would be interested in any advice???

Hi a little information required here.

Was the loan secured or unsecured?

Do you know why it was not included in your IVA?

Are you in touch with your ex at all?

Given the length of time since this debt was set up, if it was unsecured and there was any period of more than six years between payments, it is statute barred.
