No one replying to you

intermittent problems are mostly nasty to find.
Your probably best start would be looking at event viewer, then looking in systems manager and check if there are any clashes or incompatible devices.GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time.

Random freezing sounds like it could be memory related? Do you get any blue screens?0
-
If you can id suggest a FULL (ie ~ NOT a 'quick') format of the hardrive and reinstall XP:idea:0
-
How often did Linux freeze, just out of interest?

Once formatted you then need all the relevant DRIVERS for your machine:idea:0

ok i have done a full format and got all the drivers from the acer site for xp it is not freezing as much but still freezing
maybe it is something too do with the memory
linux did not freeze but i could not get on with it and seeing as i have an original xp disc sat there did not think it would do any harm

Goto WINDOWS UPDATE and CUSTOM and download any HARDWARE drivers you can:idea:0

well done all that and it still freezing i guess i will have too just get used too linux and bite the bullet and reinstall it

If its still freezing then one of the drivers is missing/wrong. Or some hardware isnt right in some way (Maybe a leads loose or whatever)
Have you updated the USB drivers? They sometimes cause freezing issues if you havnt
I dont know how your connected but sometimes you need to switch off the modem service or wireless service if not in use:idea:0
