If stuff doesn't come out first time around with one of the in wash stain removers, I usually give it a good hard rub with a vanish stick, and kind of wet it and scrub it about, then it goes back in the machine.

Last resort is to then put it in a bowl and sprinkle on a little bit of oxy bleach stain remover powder over the stain and add just a little bit of water so it's wet over the stain, I then leave it so work for a bit, and then bung it back in the machine (with another white load),

But if you try this DO NOT leave it in the sunlight or anywhere warm, otherwise you will get a hideous YELLOW stain (I found this out the hard way - it does SAY on the tub, but who reads the small print on something they've been using for years :o)

  • Hi all :)

DS (6) is forever coming home from school with all manner of stains on his shirts (mud, food, paint, unidentifiable stains etc). I feel like I have to replace the shirts every month as they are a state :o

Does anyone know of any product available/helpful tip to get out these stains? They are driving me mad!!

Apologies if theres a really obvious answer, my baby brain is not working properly today!

    Thanks,
    Jovi x

I haven't tried it myself (but always mean to!) but I've heard that Napisan is good for getting whites really white.
  • I don't have shirts to wash but an hour or so pre-wash soak with soda crystals, a couple of drops of bleach and some very hot (nearly boiling) water is great for getting stains out of white dish towels

Not quite sure if this will work on the stains but my daughter wears white shirts to show her horses and you can imagine the state that her collars get in!! Someone once recommended to me to coat the collar in normal everyday shampoo before putting into the washing machine and it works bringing all the muck out of the collar!! Worth a go :)

I soak my kids shirts/polo tops in a bowl with a good glug of sterilising fluid and water, leave overnight and then rinse, gets pretty much all stains out. :)

For food stains I put them out on the line all day no matter what the weather - the sunlight makes a huge difference.

  • Soda crystals work for me. (DS is 4 and similarly dirt- inclined) Please don't feel you have to replace the shirts that often- if anyone says anything (which they won't) simply roll your eyes skywards and smile while saying "well what do you expect, he's six?!"

  • They get no better by 12 and a half. Or 15. Girls, too. Especially when they are into art and the like.

I suggest you keep a packet of long sleeved shirts in your wardrobe.

This doesn't mean you can get the stains out everytime (the others have posted advice on that score - although a hot wash certainly helps, rather than wasting time and money on 30), but at least you have a perfect, pristine shirt for school photos and other special occasions in the year.
