Hello Everyone,
Ive started to grow a few things at home & this morning replanted red & white onions in a larger pot, when i bought them they were alreay growing..
Daft Question but...! How will i know when the onions have grown? How long does this take?
I have planted -
White Onion - Ailsa Craig & Red Onion - Red Barron.
They have gone into miricle grow, watered well & in the sun at the minute. Over night while the weather is like this they will be in a plastic green house..
Also!! (another one!!) i have approx 12 red & 9 white...how many onions does this produce?
Sorry for the daft simple questions!
Thanks
Ness.

Onions are fully grown when the green leaves on top flop over and lay flat. Usually late summer but it varies depending on when you planted them and where you live. You can eat them before they are fully grown - they just might not taste quite as strong/mature as a fully grown onion.
You only get one onion per seed or set. The bulb just grows bigger. Watch out as they are growing for thick seed heads which sprout out of the tops. If you get these break them off the plant, but use the onion up then because it won't grow any more. (its not worth saving the seed from these "early bolters" as they probably won't grow into big onions - better to keep your biggest, best onion and let that go to seed, then use the seed from that next year).0 -
Hi, you will only get one onion per plant and they don't need to be in the greenhouse - save you some space for other things!Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0

Answers my question! They are outside now..basking in the sun..Can these plants be planted all summer? for a big supply or is there a season?

No need to waste the seeds, though - they give a very nice mild onion taste if scattered in a salad.0 -

There is a season, they need a long growing time to swell & ripen, hence start Spring, harvest Autumn, but you could beat the system a bit next year by planting Japanese onion sets [not from Japan, just called that, like Brussel sprouts] in the Autumn, they overwinter and mature in Summer, or they do if the winter is not too wet & they rot instead
You could also sow spring onions, again not for spring but just called that, they are really just young onionsNumerus non sum0
