limestone installation

hi what l want to know is what are the problems of installing a limestone fire surround apart from the weight issue .L amm getting a fireplace surround and fire installed by a corgi man.Lchoose a marble surround at first however my first choice was a limestone fire surround. My installer has gone on holiday for 2 weeks and the limestone fire surround has been reduced by 275 and so now can afford it.Would he have a problem with installing ,are you meant to get a specialist in.The offer is only on for 1 week so do l buy it

Shouldn't be any more difficult than marble (marble is just a form of limestone).

  • thank you l just thought with it being heavy it would be difficult to install and cut.It says it is 200kg in weight and it comes in piece so will that mean it will need special wall ties or will that come with the fire it is just the weight of it l am worried about

I'd get the fireplace installed by a stone specialist and the fire connected by a corgi guy.

Unless your corgi guy is experienced in stone, don't risk him doing it.

Also seal the Limestone with Lithofin Stain Stop MN once fitted, it's an impregnating sealer that will not change the natural appearance of the stone. (Don't be tempted by stain stop Plus...it's very difficult to apply without streaking as opposed to the normal product which is very simple to apply).

Don't understand why you would need to cut it?

As for ties, it should come with fixings, otherwise ask the supplier, as they are the ones with the specialist knowledge.

As far as weight is concerned, it depends on what your floor is - concrete slab/suspended floor with flooboards etc. If suspended, then depending on size of fireplace, you may have to spread the load with cross bracing between the joists, but again, your supplier should have more specialist knowledge

  • The floor is concrete so no problems there. The fire l am getting is a outset fire l was just thinking that if it needed to be cut he would have trouble cutting it.However when he came out before he went away he did saying that the fire would not be a problem anf that l could have any surround l wanted, but l did not even mention about the limestone one has it was out of my price range.L think it will be ok has he is very helpful and will sort the any problems out
