Tried loads thanks, not impressed.0

Its not for everyone, sometimes its good to admit defeat and stick with what you know.
I do find it funny that when something that you've paid for goes wrong its accepted with very few compliants but when something you haven't paid for doesn't work first time perfectly you've no tolerance.0 -
Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions, I did try Mint on a live cd and tried all the suggestions to get the wireless working but to no avail
Decided to just take the plunge and install a dual boot with ubuntu and xp because you can only do so much running from the cd. As soon as ubuntu finished installing it had a little icon telling me there were drivers to install for the wireless card. Clicked it, installed them and straight away wireless was up and running.
So all that messing about/worrying for nothing!
Oh well, sorted now so i can get on with learning how to make the most of linux
Thanks All0 -
Ubuntu is good like that the propriety drivers dont come with the cd but it'll tell you if you require them and the choice is yours whether you want them.
Enjoy your new OS. If you need help with what programs you want and eye candy so it looks like vista or mac just ask.0 -
First thing is have a play around with "Compiz"
you can do some fun screen and windows effects

Sorry, I just assumed that you'd been stung by Desktop Linux distros of old. I tried them a while ago and couldn't get on at all, then tried Ubuntu 2 years ago and haven't looked back since
Its not for everyone and I make a point of not lecturing about it (which I hate). I myself dual boot to use XP when working from home (but barely use XP otherwise).Mortgage £120K, monthly overpayment £600, 18 years and £100K saved0 -

Thanks, looking like mac or vista i'm not really fussed about but i am pretty new to ubuntu so if you could point me towards any programs/sites to help me make the most of it that would be great.
As i said i only really wanted something stable for general use but i might as well mke the most of what linux has to offer!0 -

If you want to install all the stuff you need for watching DVDs, listening to mp3 etc do a google of top 10 things to do after installing Ubuntu, then pick the ones you want.Mortgage £120K, monthly overpayment £600, 18 years and £100K saved0 -

I agree, first thing I install every time, plays everything!
audio codecs good if you intend to use audio program like rhythmbox or banshee. I use these with my ipod. I've found your prompted to download plugins etc if you dont already have them, this is a great improvementMortgage £120K, monthly overpayment £600, 18 years and £100K saved0
