How long does it take an item to arrive from America?

How long should a small item from the US take to get here? Item was posted on the 28/04/09. I have the tracking number and but it comes back with is the item has been processed; date and time the item was posted.

I've had some items arrive within a week of sale ending (so posting would have taken just under a week) and some that have taken a month or two (this is on both my ebay sales and items I've purchased from USA myself)
I've also noticed no pattern in delivery times if you send standard airmail or recorded airmail (despite the extra cost)
