Most of the time it's irrelevant to the Bank. It's the customer who's an idiot ... or has a poor aim. Unfortunately the sharp rise in electronic payments has resulted in unprecedented numbers being pointed, out of ignorance / carelessness to the wrong place. I've worked in remittance processing for years ..... and seen BACS failure rates, at the receiving end, as high as 18%. All because the reference number is either invalid or not specified. And some (invalid Sort Code / Account) ... wouldn't have even made it through to our suspense files.
That must, at a lower level, also translate to Bank accounts? If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Yes I see. I must admit I've often thought about this when setting up payments with online banking. Before its advent, these transactions would have had to have been done in a branch where the cashier would guide us through the process and ensure all the boxes were filled in on the form.
It's so easy to make a mistake now and there's no-one there to check it, so I can understand how easy it is to make that mistake.
However, if we're old enough to have bank accounts we're old enough to make sure all the information is correct before hitting the 'go' button. If you will the end, you must will the means.0 -
