anyone can claim whatever email adress they want to on sent mail.
Think of it as writing your return address on the back on a normal envelope, theres nowt stopping you writing any address down, although not so good if you're expecting a reply.
Email pretty much works the same way, there is stuff like digital signing but not many people use it.
You can really do anything either, just need to hope your spam filters will catch it.0 -
don't advertise your email address on the site, use contact forms instead0

Sunshine54, I never trust companies or do business with contact forms. They always remind me of those viagra, or watch sellers. Come to think of it there is probably no real reason not to, but just feels wrong, nasty, faceless and cheap - a bit like a medium to large company having a hotmail account?
Just my take on it though?GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time.0 -

End customers and users are allowed to disciminate, and often do everytime we purchase a product! Just it tends to be the worst, of the worst that have these, also they often never give out a phone number or at best an 0870 type number.
Sorry you do not like to hear this, but I bet there are more like me out there!GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time.0 -
I get lots of spam emails, and quite a few from my own email address. When we send out emails we are telling our address to the whole web world and some sites just harvest addresses so they can spread their own messages quickly all over the net.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0

There's a system called SPF (Sender Policy Framework) you can use to limit someone's capability to send e-mail as your domain. Essentially you post a specially formatted TXT record for your domain containing the mail servers you send from. Then receiving mail servers that support SPF will reject (or mark as spam) mail that does not come from those servers. Of course it relies on receiving mail servers to support it, but many do. Google Mail supports it for example.
I use SPF to protect my domains. It's a bit fiddly but worth setting up I think.

i agree with the hotmail sentiment, but disagree with the contact form thing. The reason why people have gone to forms, is that their email address is hidden from the world, and therefore safe from the spam spiders that crawl through websites finding email addresses to spam.
However, you state it seems wrong, nasty, faceless and cheap, well actually it's a lot more expensive to create a contact form, that it is to type an email address..
nasty, no. it means that they can actually see your email when you fill in the form, rather than miss it because it looks like spam
wrong, no, it's the right way to have a website, On the same page as the contact form, they should also have an address, and a telephone number (in the UK anyway), so this totally negates the need for the faceless rant..
ok, you might never do business with me, but i'll never design a website with an email address on, so i'd never want you as my customer...
