Boiler help?

Hi, we have just moved into our new place and for the first time I have gas as well as electricity. As it warm there is no need for CH I just want the boiler to heat the water in the tank. I have set the central heating programming system, which is inside the airing cupboard to come on for 2 hours in the morning and an hour in the evening. I have been through all the options on the programmer and made sure that only hot water is programmed. The problem is that we have the boiler behind the fire in the lounge and we are forever hearing the boiler 'firing up' outside the hours that we have programmed. I know that the programmer is set to the correct times as the red light comes on when its supposed to be on. But we dont want to waste gas and I don't like the way the boiler fires up outside of the selected hours. I am considering switching the boiler off manually in the morning and turning it back on before we go to bed, but this means getting on the floor and removing the bottom of the fire every time! There must be something simpler I can do? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    Hmmm...how strange.

If the boiler is firing up, something must be calling for heat.

Presuming you've set the controls correctly, do you have a frost-stat anywhere protecting the system? It's not usual in your situation - frost-stats are usually only fitted where the boiler is located in an cold place like a garage, but if you do have one, it could be set too high. You need to take the cover off the stat to get to the controls.

If you have a room thermostat, it might be worth turning that right down ... just in case you haven't actually set the programmer correctly and the CH is coming on.

Otherwise I think you'll need to get a pro in to find out what is calling for heat and so causing the boiler to fire up.
