Problem with Ubuntu remix

I have an acer 150 which came with Linpus.I made this dual boot by adding Ubuntu Remix.Everything has been running fine till this morning when i updated Ubuntu on automatic update. After downloading the update files it froze when it went to install them.Upon rebooting, Ubuntu wouldnt load, coming up with loads of errors. Can Ubuntu just be reinstalled (ie overwrite existing Ubuntu) or will that create a 3rd partition (ie 2 X Ubuntu + Linpus.)
Thanks in advance.

i'm sure if you select the manual partitioning option in the ubuntu installer you will be able to overwitre the existing ubuntu installation

Is this done by following on screen prompts during installation.?

    I assume so.

Most distros will let you choose between options such as:

    1) Use entire hard disk
    2) Use existing linux partitions
    3) Custom partitioning.

If in doubt, look at the ubuntu howtos and forums.

OK it gives the option to specify partitions manually.By selecting this option 4 partitions are shown with the option to delete.

2 of the partitions are Linpus and Ubuntu. The other 2 are swap partitions. What are these? Can i just delete the Ubuntu and leave the other 3?

The swap partitions are just "working space" for the OS to page memory to/from disk.

You must have one, and you only need one. However, be careful - if you delete the one that Linpus was configured to use, it may not boot, and if it does, it won't be happy.
