phone & broadband help please!

Hi,
I've moved into my own place for the 1st time & I'm confused about the whole home phone/broadband/line rental thing.

According to my landlord we have a BT line (we don't have a phone or number that I know of though). I've seen a good deal with tiscali through this site for broadband & home phone for £14.99 per month (free wkend/evening calls etc).

Can someone please tell me do I need to just contact tiscali to sort it out or do I need to phone BT 1st to reconnect my phone line? & would I then be paying BT directly for the phone line & tiscali just for the broadband? :confused:Argghh..... can someone please advise? I'd be very grateful!

Thanks :j

Firstly do you have a BT master socket and is the BT line connected? That's the first thing you need to sort out.

Welcome to the MSE forums catye.

Tiscali is no more - it's been bought by Carphone Warehouse.

As macman says, the first thing to establish is the status of the BT line the landlord says you have. I assume that means there's a telephone socket somewhere. Get a corded phone (Argos sell them for less than £3) and plug it in. If there's a dial tone, dial 17070 and make a note of the telephone number the automated voice tells you the circuit is identified as.

If there's no dial tone, it'll be a question of deciding who you want to pay line ental to and get them to reconnect the line. The easiest and cheapest way is likely to be BT because they have a free connection offer on until the end of June.

With a BT line, you can shoose any ADSL ISP.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Thanks very much for your replies.
I'll try plugging in a phone when I get home (I'm sure I've seen a socket somewhere!) & take it from there.
