Tesco.CON

Normally I use my Credit Card for a number of monthly purchases & do not check individual transactions in the Card Statement. However, I used my debit card for a Tesco.con grocery order. Yesterday got my Bank statement showing the sum deducted for Tesco order was £139.20, yet on rechecking my Order Confirmation email it stated the total amount should have been £132.35 less multisave discounts.
Checked the website to discover the guide price was £128.35 This making overcharge of £10.35 on my order.
Believing this to be an accounting error I emailed Tesco Customer Service, receiving this reply:

"Please note that the prices on our Grocery website are guide prices only. The actual price you pay will be the price charged in store at the time your order is picked for delivery. The actual order value cannot be determined until the day of delivery because the prices stated on the website may vary either above or below the prices in store on the day your order is picked and delivered".

I just wonder how often I have been overcharged like this in the past, believing the price quoted is the actual price I had to pay.
Also, how many other people have Tesco overcharged without their knowledge ?

Think I'll think carefully before doing another Tesco.con shop again !

What was on the receipt you were given on delivery though? Mine is always different to the guide price, and I've never had an instance where the actual delivery receipt price is different to that debitted to my account.

Is this includeing delivery charges? That can add up to £5 on your order.

Were there any substitutions as they may have an effect too?

    Yes that included delivery charge.

No substitutions & no loose fruit or veg.

Unfortunately, threw out my delivery note before the bank statement arrived.

Always assumed when purchasing items the price stated is the price they must by law charge. (Should the price vary on delivery date the customer should & is made aware of this price change, before purchasing).

If I buy a product from Amazon, Play, HMV, etc & the price rises before it is dispatched they do not charge the higher price.

    Thanks Penelope Penguin !

I've never bought from Tesco online but I have from Asda and it clearly states that the total is just an estimate and you will be charged the price on the day of delivery. eg. this week I ordered some asparagus priced at £1.65 but when my shopping arrived the next day I'd only been charged £1 for them because the price had dropped that day. They've always charged me the exact amount that is on the delivery note and one good thing with Asda is you don't pay any extra for subsitutions.

  • Unfortunately, it's just a guide price. And that is stated fairly clearly with an explanation (it must be fairly clear, because I found it........ it's not like a BT phone bill!) The actual price you are charged depends on how much the items are at your local store, or so it seems. That said, the difference is only normally a few pence.... and it works both ways!

Substitutions can make a difference...... Tesco value swapped for Tesco finest luxury whatever a few times can soon make add up

Other than that, it could be that some special offers you thought you were getting were out of date by the time you got your order. The dates that the special offers are valid is show when you click on a special offer.

When your order arrives, you are allowed to send things back if you change your mind because the price has changed. It says so on the Tesco site.

Suspicious of this guide price malarkey, my girlfriend and I printed off our guide-priced order list and checked it off again the delivery not. It was in our favour, apart from some shampoo which was buy 4 for £ and they'd set us 3 and charge us more than £4 for them.....so we sent the 3 back.

We've also set all products to not be substituted, or only to be substituted with a specific other product. It's annoying when you have to go shopping the day after to get the bits they couldn't find in-store;), but it's better than ending up with their most profitable product instead of the value one.... :money:

I hope my random ramblings have been of some use. While I probably haven't slagged off Tesco as much as you';d have liked, this on-line shopping thing takes a bit of getting used to.

Next time - keep your receipts etc!!!
