  • Were about to have our hallway refitted, but reuse the existing underlay.

We plan to rent the house out, so dont see the point in new underlay.
  • Hiya

We wanted carpet really quick to help remarket our house, bought some looped style carpet off the roll in CarpetRight as we wouldn't need to wait for it to be delivered from their warehouse, but we went for a good quality underlay.

I'm never buying cheap carpet again! it's the looped style and you can see the base underneath, esp on the bends in the stairs. We told our buyers the underlay would last them a few carpet changes.

The cat didn't even like the carpet - she tugged at one corner and it unravelled about 6"!

Shop around for different bits, will dave a fortune in total.

Just had my upstairs done, here's the maths:

Carpet @ £7 SQM, minimum underlay I'd consider £8 SQM. FREE FITTING (yeah right!).

    Room 1: 4.2 x 3.4 = 14.3 sqm. Require 4.2 x 4 = 16.8 sqm off roll.
    Room 2: 4.6 x 2.8 = 12.9 sqm. Require 4.6 x 4 = 18.4 sqm off roll.
    Landing: 4.2 x 1.3 = 5.5 sqm. Require 4.2 x 4 = 16.9 sqm off roll.
    Stairs, offcuts from above.

    Total:
    Carpet: 52 sqm x £7 = £364
    Underlay : 52 sqm x £8 = £416
    Stair fitting surcharge & Doorbars (2): £45 & £40 = £85

    Total quote: £865

    What I did.

Same carpet at £7 SQM. Underlay, brand new rolls of 11mm cloud 9 (MUCH better quality than United Carpets stuff) £25/roll off ebay.

    Carpet: 35.2 sqm x £7 = £246.40
    Underlay: 3 rolls (approx 31 sqm) = £75
    Fitting (including doorbars and grippers): 42 sqm x 1.50 = £63, (paid him £75 as a tip)
    Total: £396.40

So thats a saving of £469, it's the same carpet and I've got better quality underlay!!!
