Should I get another credit card to boost my credit rating?

A few months ago I was tempted by an iphone after having pay-as-you-go since the beginning of time. Anyway I was very surprised to find that I didn't pass the credit check. So.... I gave up and didn't follow it up any further. 6 months on and I've almost saved enough (I think) for a decent mortgage but I'm worried about not having a good credit rating.
I've checked on creditexpert (Experian I believe.) and it doesn't look good. Apparently I'm not on the electoral at my current address even though I am. I think this is because I used my full name (including middle names) on the electrol role and only my first and last name to register on the site???? Even more worrying, my HSBC bank account and credit card are not shown on the credit report. From reading around the forum this is because I've had the account and credit card for many years. Maybe someone could confirm this is the case?? I do use the credit card sporadically but always pay the full amount off straight away.
So the point is, should I be moving bank accounts and getting a new credit card to boost my credit rating?? Does it work like this or am I missing something??
I think I will be in a position to buy my first house in about 12 months if I can sort this out. Thanks in advance for anyone who can help.
