Once you've installed ITunes, plug in your Nano. Itunes will pick it up and you'll be able to moves files onto it.

You can then rip your CD's and transfer the songs to the Nano.

Nope, theres no need for this. It is automatically "downloaded" when you install iTunes. Basically, Itunes is like Windows Media Player, except its from the same people who make the iPod Nano, Apple. The people who made iTunes made it so iPods would only be able to work with it, so you need iTunes to put music on the iPod. Once you have downloaded and started up iTunes, connect the iPod to the laptop using the white cable, and a message should pop up saying 'Found new iPod Nano' or something similar. Follow the instructions to set it up, and once thats done, pop the CD into the drive on the laptop. It should start playing, so stop it for now. Now go to iTunes, and press 'Rip to library' or something similar, and once done, go to the iPod on the left bar in iTunes, click on it and press 'Sync'. Once this is done, it should say 'Ok to disconnect iPod' at the top of iTunes. Now, unplug the white cable and check to make sure the CD is on the iPod.

Sorry if you found this patronising, but hope I helped.

right first thing, you dont download the ipod nano
second thing itunes is the software/program which you use to move songs to your ipod, you also use it to copy/move music to your pc frm the cd,
the itunes store is for buying songs, albums you wouldnt already own

    Not strictly true.

There are plenty alternatives to Itunes - Yamipod, Anapod & Songbird to name but a few of the more popular choices. Winamp also has an Itunes plug-in.

Fair enough, but from the tone of the messages by the OP, I thought I wouldn't over-complicate things.

I even used to use one of them with my iTouch...
