MP3 player fm transmitter

I want to play my Sony NW5HD MP3 player on the stereo in the car and in the house. What's the best piece of kit to get to do this and where would I get it from? Many thanks in advance for any advice.

  • Well, officially you can't. Radio transmitters are not allowed in this country without a broadcasting license. But you could buy an iTrip or Belkin Tunecast and I'm sure if you only use it as you should *wink, wink* there'll be no problems.

There's a ton of this kind of thing on eBay, but I'm pretty sure I've seen them for sale on Play.com and on iPodWorld (or iWorld, whichever it's called). You'll have to Google for the address of that. There's sometimes vouchers (check the vouchers section) for use in there too!!!

Take a look at Maplin - they have some things like that.

Specifically, they have one that you can put in-line with your FM Aerial in the car, which then just squirts it down the wire rather than broadcasting it. This gives a better sound quality.

Alternatively, depending upon your car, you might be able to get a box to interface to the auxillary input or the CD-Changer interface to get the sound in. I've got one in my car. It's just a little box (quite pricey though) that plugs into the pre-wired CD-Changer bus lead behind the glove box. You then plug the MP3 player into that. You can't control it via the stereo or anything, but you get the sound in very good quality through it.

In the car, then an FM transmitter would work, but in the house, a cable would give far better quality - assuming your stereo has dual phono inputs and a standard headphone socket on the MP3 player, a 3.5" jack to dual phono would work out at less than a tenner and sound way better than transmitting wirelessly over FM.
  • Thanks very much to the above for the advice - is there anybody out there who has used one of these and can vouch for the sound quality?

Please don't waste your money. Got one from eBay and the quality of the sound and amount of interference that you get is quite appaling. Save your money and get a cheap cassette adapter which would be much much better. Mine literally ended up in the bin.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

Don't use an FM Transmitter they're generally considered to be about as much use as a lead ballon. There's a proper kit you can get which'll connect your player to your head unit, but you need to know what you're doing. If you've got a HU that came with the car check out Autoleads for a kit. If you've got an after market HU you might find it a little more difficult. Your best bet is to check out some car websites; https://www.speeding.com etc.

I've got the old E99 and can't get anything to connect it to my Panny HU, so ended up using a lead I have to hook it upto the Sub channel! lol It works OK, but is not ideal.

I've just done a quick Google, try some results from here; the first one looks hopeful! I know you can get a kit for the HD models, but I can't remember where I saw them, sorry.
