If the company is willing to pay you 100% for your sickness, I see no reason why they shouldn't call you (within good reason!). I have a different attitude to holiday, if I'm on holiday I don't expect to be contacted by work, in that case I'm being paid what I owe and not because of the generosity of work. Like wise I won't conact anyone on holiday, no matter how urgent.
I'd agree with this - An employer would want to be able to plan for their workload which includes knowing if people who are on short term sick are likely to return soon. There are ways and means of going about it (my employer asks us to phone in/report sick each day and try and advise when we hope we might return to work) but there should be a way of keeping touch with ill employees that is fair to both employer and employee. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -
Working for a large company there is a standard practice at my work that all managers must follow. If you are sick you must call in everyday (if you don't the manager will call you).On this call you must give details of what is wrong, what you have done to get better, when you expect to go backand the ridiculous question of what will you do in future to avoid futre illness!!!
Fortunately my employer took a more enlightened view, and did not expect me to phone from my hospital bed, which would have been extremely difficult the day of the operation because I was unconscious throughout the working day! :rotfl:Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Unless you're completely knocked out by real flu or strong painkillers, then what's the problem with the boss quickly phoning up to enquire if you're ok, or if he needs to know a password or something? You're still able to talk are you not?
I once phoned a workmate who was "off sick" to ask something. Background noise of cars, etc, suggested that he was out and about.
Plus how many people are off sick for 4 days with something bad, and return to work on the 5th day so as to not need a doctors certifcate? Hmmmmm.......0 -
Sadly there are a lot of lazy 8888888888888's who abuse 'sick pay', and then everyone else suffers when companies stop their sick pay schemes.
Ever was it thus.0 -
Borrow from and lend to (not 'can I lend that pen off you')
there - place; their - belonging to; they're - they are

I once had a job in a hospital. One of my colleagues had an operation and was in a ward upstairs recovering, attached to a drip, etc. Our manager went up to the ward and made her come downstairs to do some apparently urgent work that couldn't be done without her. My colleague was feeling to weak to argue with her so did as she was told. The ward staff were furious when they found out. This was the same manager who succeeded in sacking someone because she had cancer (obviously the reason stated for dismissal was not that she had cancer, but it was totally contrived and based on the fact that she was going to be off sick for a long time).3-6 Month Emergency Fund #14: £9000 / £10,0000

I am curious what rights an employee has to visit an employee who is off sick. I have a boss that wanted to visit me after being off for two weeks and going into a third. It is covered by a sick note and I declined the visit due to not feeling up to it0

Depends upon your contract.
Sensible employers will have such clauses in the contract [also for example being able to get you to see a separate doctor from your own GP].
Why???? Because too many people take the pi** and spoil it for everyone else0
