BT referring me to debt agency for bill I paid 3 years ago

This morning I received a letter from a debt agency for £92 from BT. I am not with BT I cancelled them in 2003.

We had received a bill from them 2wks ago and my husband rang up (didn't get name) and said we are not with you. The advisor apologised and said they had confirmation the bill (£13) was paid Aug 03. She told us to ignore the bill.

So this morning when I rang BT and again I was told the bill had been paid. I asked for this to be put in writing but they said they couldn't and after a 15 min argument the manager came on the phone.

He said my cheque had bounced in 2003 and they wanted the money, and I would have to prove I ahd paid the bill.

Told him a) Not with that bank anymore b) the bank hadn't written out to me tto adivse about bounced cheque and they hadn't charged me as I do internet banking everyday. c) why had it taken them 3 years to apply for the money.

I told him I would write to the CE of co he told me I couldn't send a letter in as they did complaints over the phone. I told him that was illegal ( prb not) and he couldn't stop me complaining to CE.

Eventually he said if I paid the debt of £13 he would waiver the other £80 admin fee and court costs. I advised this was not good enough and he agreed to wavier the whole lot. I asked for this to be confimred in writing, but I ahve a horrible feeling this is not going to go away.

Any advice

If it persists and gets nasty you could try sending an email to Ben Verwaayen (BT's CEO). In my experience his staff are very good at picking up his email.

If you don't know how to find his email address then PM me.

Make sure you keep the letter or scan it, the put it on a cdr just in case for future reference.

I am always loosing or throwing letters away due to lack of space in our house. I find scanning them with adobe pdf and then keeping them in my documents/pdf is a good way to store things. I also back them up onto a portable hard drive just in case. I find scanning manuals for appliances is useful thing to do also.

Gald you got sorted, I hate companies that threaten people like this, must peopel tend to back down because they are so worried about being blacklisted or face yet more bully boy balieffs costs, organised bloody crime if you ask me.

This is not admissable in a court of law. You must keep the hardcopy. I bought a fireproof box and keep all critical stuff like this in it. You have to put some limits on what you keep otherwise it soon fills up, but a letter confirming a debt was settled would definately get in. Likewise, I don't keep statements in the box but do keep final statements and letters confirming closure of accounts. I also have a briefcase where I do keep all statements, credit card reciepts, old bills, etc.
