I moved into a new property about 7 weeks ago and have not received a bill yet - I'd like to get this sorted out so I don't end up with a huge chunk of money to pay.

Can I just choose a supplier and sign up with them? Or do I need to find out who the current supplier is first and then switch?

If I can just choose who my supplier is can I go through one of the switching sites/cashback etc? Just a bit confused about whether or not I can switch from an unknown supplier.

You have inherited the previous occupant's supplier and should have contacted them with meter readings when you moved in. They will use the readings given by the previous occupants which may or may not be correct so I'd sort that now. Get on the best tariff you can, without a tie-in and then look at switching. You need annual consumption in kwh to get the best option so, if you don't have this, guess and switch to cheapest supplier. Keep checking - best bet now may not be in a month's time.

I assume you mean a new build - in which case the the builder should be able to provide details.

phone up any electricity supplier - they should be able to check mpas online to tell you who your current supplier is - you need to register with them first

if you have your meter number that is also a good thing to check - especially with a new build as sometimes the metering address information can be wrong and needs correcting!
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

beit eletricity or gas the onus is on your to register with the current supplier if there is a registered one when you move in or register with any supplier if none listed,

As you have not that is why you have not got a bill yet, though bills are usually every 3 months.
