Help

Have loaded some DVD copy software (DVD Region + CSS Free), now neither disc drive recognises cd or cdroms. Only the e drive recognises DVD, the other D drive does not recognise anything, and says that the media is unable to be written to. Have tried everything I can think of, checked the drives status both say that the apparatus is working correctly. If i attempt to run a disc in th eD drive i get the message I/O error.

I have even tried changing the equipment, and lost both drives from the 'My computer', have re installed the equipment and all is as it was.

I have tried using system restore to no avail.

Any help gratefully received.

    Hi Will
Just so I can get my head round this so please bear with me, do you

    1: Have two drives?
    2: D: cd rom?
    3: E: DVD rewriter?

You have checked in device manager and there are no yellow triangles.

Do you have any other new programs running ie Alcohol 120%? Daemon tools or any other such progs :)

If you can answer these questions may point us in right direction
    Cheers
    Jon

The error that comes up does it say
"The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."
    or just "I/O error"

Ok The error message is usually caused from Windows trying to use a transfer mode that your CD/DVD drive cannot recognize.

To fix it you will need to change the transfer mode in your IDE channel properties. Here's how:
    Go to Start
    Right click My Computer
Select Manage from the resulting menu
In the Computer Management window, select Device Manager
In the right pane, click to expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
Identify your CD/DVD drive in the expanded menu and right click the appropriate drive
    Select Properties
In the Properties windows, click the Advanced Settings tab
In the Transfer Mode box that represents your CD/DVD drive (typically Device 1), open the drop down menu and select PIO Only
Click OK and exit all windows.
If this does not resolve your issue, then you will need to go back using the above procedure and change the Device 1 in step #9 back to "DMA if available". Then, change Device 0 to "PIO Only" in the Transfer Mode box.

    Device 0: Primary IDE Channel
    Device 1: Secondary IDE Channel

If this doesn't work put all settings back as they were and we'll try something else

  • Thanks Jon, but unfortunately no luck this time, any other advice?

if you're on XP try a system restore to before you installed the software to see if it is that causing it to rule it out of the equation.

Did try the system restore, but no real difference.

Hmmm the problem we have is an I/O error can be one of a lot of things as it is a generic SCSI fault all that is definate is that it is the communication between the OS and the device.

So it could be a clutch at straws time!!

Have you deleted it from Device manager then let hardware manager find it
Have you updated all drivers for it
    Are all cables fitted correctly
Are these new dvd disks you are writing to? or have you burned using them before?
Have you tried to use a different Burning Program

You say you changed the equipment does this mean you changed the cables over and then lost both drives?

One other possibilty is that the DVD-Ram drive is on its way out (or its gone!) or the cable is playing up, have you had it long?

Sorry about all the questions but its really just trying to eliminate the obvious, but as I said above it really could be one of many reasons. Maybe someone else has an idea which I haven't thought of yet and I will try and think of a few more to cross of the list.

    Cheers

EDIT..just a thought..Is your DVD-Ram drive set to master? IF so try setting it to slave.
