DVD's are region coded, you are probably using a US region disk in a Europe region player. As advised you need to unlock the DVD player to use it.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

The UK dvd players plays region 2 disks as standard. If the disk is any other region, then some dvd players will not play them. A lot of dvd players these days are region free and will play anything, others you can 'hack' to make them region free.
What region is the disk? Did you buy it online? Disks sold here in the UK are region 2. How old is the dvd player and what make/model is it? Maybe someone here will know how to make it region free so you can play the disk.

If it's just an ordinary Goodmans DVD player, the model number is a series of letters and digits that probably begins "GDVD..."
If you give us that model number in full, we should be able to get instructions on how to remove the region lock.0 -
