Digital camera memory cards - compatibility problem

I have a Canon Powershot A540 digital camera, around 18 months old. I have been using SanDisk Ultra 2 memory cards in it. A short while back I bought what I thought was a spare card, and it turned out it was not compatible with my card because it was a San Disk Ultra Pro 2. Then I was in Tesco and bought a card for it which turned out to be incompatible because it was an SDHC card (right size wrong format).

So this time I went on line to Viking where we have an account and ordered an Ultra 2 card. The picture showed the card as being a San Disk Ultra 2 but they sent a Sand Disk SDHC (no Ultra 2 in the name). When I looked again in the catalogue, I could see it actually said Ultra 2 and SDHC in small letters on the image and was described as an Ultra 2 SDHC card. Is there such a thing? The card sent says SDHC only. It doesn't work either, reports a "memory error" in the catalogue.

All the cards which don't work are the exact same size as the original one. Isn't the plain vanilla Ultra 2 made anymore? How come if my camera is only 18 months old? And if so how are you supposed to memory obtain cards for it?

You didn't say what size you bought.

SDHC are usually for greater than 4GB cards Anything below 4GB should be regular SD not High Capacity. Ultra II come in both SD and SDHC depending on what size you buy.

I bought 4gb - maybe that was where I went wrong? Maybe it was too big for my camera? I hadn't thought of that.

Thats probably it. Ultra 2 is the range name, rather than the specific card details. Try w2w.co.uk they usually work out cheapest for me, and remember quidco.

I just never thought there might be a max size on the external memory card I could use in my camera, at the 4gb level.

Just to be clear, are the memory cards sold in SD format up to 2g and SDHC over 2 gig? And is it just my camera's ability to handle the extra capacity which is preventing me from using the 4gb card, rather than an incompatible format on the card?
